Can I Get Dental Implants?
There is no better treatment for replacing a missing tooth than a dental implant. Single dental implants match the look and function of natural teeth like no other treatment can. They are durable and long-lasting, allow you to eat anything you want, and are as easy to brush and floss as natural teeth. It is no wonder then, that they are so popular. But can anyone get dental implants, or are there restrictions on who qualifies?
Most people qualify for dental implants. Whether you have lost teeth due to injury, decay, gum disease, infection or any other reason, if you are healthy and your jaw has finished growing, you can get a dental implant.
While most anyone can qualify, there are certain conditions that can impact the success of an implant. For this reason, you may be cautioned against getting an implant if any of these factors apply to you.
• Teeth grinding or clenching
• Insufficient bone to support an implant
• Active or untreated gum disease
• Dry mouth, due to a health condition, medication or another reason
Some of these factors can be reduced or eliminated, improving your candidacy for an implant. For instance, a bone graft can often be performed to increase the bone available to support an implant. A mouthguard can be worn at night to protect teeth from grinding and clenching. Gum disease can normally be treated. A medication that causes dry mouth can sometimes be exchanged for another one that does not cause that side effect.
To know for sure whether implants are right for you, your dentist will first need to conduct a thorough review of your medical history and an oral exam complete with x-rays. To find out whether you qualify, call our office to schedule an appointment.
