Keeping Your Dental Implants Clean

Keeping Your Dental Implants Clean

When it comes to tooth replacement, there is no better treatment than dental implants. Dental implants provide the most natural-looking and functional remedy for tooth loss. To ensure the health of your implant, however, it is essential that you maintain good oral hygiene habits.

A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is surgically embedded into the jawbone. Through a process called osseointegration, the bone slowly fuses to the implant over a period of three to six months, making it as secure as the root of a natural tooth. A false tooth can then be attached to the implant.

Because there is little blood circulation around an implant, it is more susceptible to infection than a natural tooth. Infection can spread to the bone, weakening it and causing the implant to fail. Therefore, it is important to clean an implant thoroughly to keep plaque and bacteria away.

The good news is that cleaning an implant is just as easy as cleaning a natural tooth. Here are some tips to follow to make sure your implant is kept clean.

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove plaque.
• Floss between your teeth daily to clean the spaces where a toothbrush cannot reach.
• Use an anti-bacterial mouth rinse to help kill harmful bacteria before they can invade your gums
• Visit your dentist at least every six months for a professional cleaning and oral exam. A professional cleaning is the only way to remove plaque that has hardened into tartar, and oral exams are a good way for your dentist to keep tabs on the health of your implant.
